Can I install a GFCI outlet myself safely and correctly?

You can install a GFCI outlet yourself, but safe, code-correct work requires verified grounding, correct line/load wiring, and post-install testing. GFCIs are required in wet or damp areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Our Rochester-area electricians routinely check grounding, GFCI/AFCI protection, and circuit load before and after the job.

  • Shut off power and verify with a tester.
  • Identify and connect line vs load correctly.
  • Test the GFCI and downstream outlets.
  • Upgrade two-prong outlets; add dedicated circuits if appliances demand.
