Why Does My GFCI Outlet Keep Tripping Randomly Without Load?

A GFCI trips when it detects a difference between hot and neutral current. That can happen “randomly” from hidden moisture, a downstream outlet/device fault, loose or improper wiring, or a failing GFCI—even with nothing plugged in. In Rochester–area homes, we start by checking grounding, GFCI/AFCI protection, and load balance, then test and replace the device if needed. GFCIs are required in wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens for safety.

Quick checks:

  • Press TEST/RESET, then observe.
  • Unplug everything downstream.
  • Look for moisture or burn marks.
  • Schedule a safety inspection.
